HLA sends two U.S. Delagates to the WCPFC Meeting in Guam.  Leland Oldenberg and Scott Barrows attended the WCPFC meeting held in Guam.  HLA President Sean Martin also attended the meeting representing the Western Pacific Fishries Council.  During the meeting The State departent appointed Sean as a Commisionar to WCPFC.  Congradulations Sean.

Boarding Ladders on Hawaii Longline Vessels

The National Marine Fisheries Service has proposed regulations requiring domestic fishing vessel operators to provide U.S. Coast Guard approved pilot ladders as a safer and more enforceble means of personnel to board certain domestic fishing vessels.  The regulation would require vessels 65' or greater with a freeboard of 4' or more to carry onboard approved ladders.

Endangered Species Workshops for 08

NOAA Fisheries Pacific Regional Office - Sustainable Fisheries Division
January - March 2008

Owners and the operators of vessels registered for use under any longline permit issued under Western Pacific fishery management plans must attend and be certified for completion of annual protected species workshops. Each year, about 250 fishermen and vessel owners are trained in Hawaii, and about 100 in American Samoa.

HLA Shallow Set Public Testimony

HLA appreciates the opportunity to provide its comments to the National Marine Fisheries Service and to the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council on the Notice of Intent to prepare a Supplemental EIS regarding the Hawaii-based shallow-set longline fishery.

Hawaii review board opposes harbor changes

The state Small Business Regulatory Review Board has voiced its opposition to changes at Kewalo Basin commercial small-boat harbor that are being proposed by another state agency. The review board is recommending that Gov. Linda Lingle not approve new rules for the Kaka'ako harbor as proposed by the Hawai'i Community Development Authority.

138th Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council Meeting

The Fisheries Council will be holding a meeting at the Ala Moana Hotel June 19th – 22, 2007.   As Longliners you may be interested in the Pelagic and International part of the meeting.  The status of the HLA swordfish proposal, longline TAC framework, IATTC and WCPFC actions are tentatively scheduled for June 21st after lunch.
